(October 18, 2018; Winnipeg, Manitoba) -- Winnipeg Jewish Theatre (WJT) opens its 31st season with Mark St. Germain's BECOMING DR. RUTH from October 27 to November 4, with a preview performance on October 25. A holocaust survivor becomes an icon in this funny, warm play. Tickets for the show are available by phone by calling (204) 477-7478 or www.wjt.ca

Karola Seigel fled Germany on the Kindertransport, joined the Haganah as a sniper in Israel, survived as a single mother in New York City, and eventually became North America's most iconic sex therapist: Dr. Ruth Westheimer. Told with heart and plenty of humour, this play delivers a tour-de-force performance chronicling the life of an extraordinary woman.

"Dr Ruth is a legend. Her life story is an epic testament to the resilience of the human spirit," says WJT Artistic Director Ari Weinberg. "This play is filled to the brim with humanity and humour all delivered in a tour-de-force performance by Mariam Bernstein. This is the life story of an icon on stage and it's a fantastic night out at the theatre! WJT is thrilled to be sharing it with Winnipeg."

If you thought you knew Dr. Ruth, this play will surprise you. The New Yorker wrote: "Who knew that the world-famous sex therapist was sent to Switzerland with a group of German-Jewish children in 1938, when she was ten years old, and was treated like a servant there? Or that her entire family was killed by the Nazis? Or that she moved to Palestine as a teen-ager and became a sniper in the Haganah? Who knew that her success as a radio-show host was due to a vow she made to herself to "repair the world" because she survived the Nazis, when more than a million Jewish children didn't?"

"In over 30 years, I have never played a more resilient, inspiring person than Dr. Ruth Westheimer," says Mariam Bernstein, the Winnipeg actress cast as the legendary sex therapist. "Her life has been driven by her love for her family, and Tikun Olam; it is a testament to focusing on the gifts we have been given and making the most of the possibilities before us. And she does it all with a fabulous sense of humour, and boundless zest for life! I'm so excited to share Dr. Ruth with WJT audiences in this production – it's going to be quite a ride."

There will be a media call on Thursday, October 25 at 2:30 PM at the Berney Theatre, 123 Doncaster Street. All media are welcome.

BECOMING DR. RUTH stars Winnipeg actor Mariam Bernstein. The show is directed by Debbie Patterson, with Matthew Paris-Irvine as Apprentice Director. Set and lighting design and costume coordination is by Ksenia Broda-Milian. Stage Manager is Ryan Bjornson.
